HOUSTON—An 8-year-old boy died Sunday night after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver, Houston police said.

Neighbors said the incident happened after 8 p.m. in the 8100 block of Lenore Street.

The child was visiting his grandparents and went outside to ride his bike, family members said.  Witnesses told police that Euaristo Hinojosa-Pena, 58, was driving a maroon Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck westbound on Lenore Street at a high rate of speed when he struck the child.  Police said the victim was attempting to cross the street on his bicycle.

Residents performed CPR on the boy until an ambulance arrived.  Then paramedics transported him to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver stayed at the scene and was taken into custody on suspicion of drunken driving. Police said the man admitted to having a couple beers before getting behind the wheel.

Hinojosa-Pena was charged Monday with driving while intoxicated in Harris County Criminal Court No. 2.

Neighbors were upset because they say people drive through the neighborhood too fast.

“I was mad because all day cars speed through here like it was a freeway,” said one resident. “They need to put some speed bumps in here or do something. Kids can’t even ride their own bikes here.”

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story indicated the victim was six years old. Family members, however, later confirmed the child was eight years old.
