JEFFERSON COUNTY, TEXAS—Foggy conditions caused between 140 to 150 vehicles to collide on Interstate 10 between Houston and Beaumont Thanksgiving morning.
Two Pearland residents were killed in the crash, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident happened on I-10 East near Winnie around 8 a.m., causing the highway to shut down in both directions. Westbound lanes reopened within a couple of hours, but eastbound lanes remained closed most of the day.
Marlon Hartford said as the sun came up, the fog was blinding.
“I hit the car in front of me because it stopped and by the time I was able to see it, I slammed on my brakes and nudged it a little bit” he said. “I put my hands like this here. I said I’m dead, I’m not gonna make it out of here.”
He did make it out unharmed, but anywhere from 80 to 90 people were injured in the pileup.
They were all taken to area hospitals.
I-10 in both directions reopened in the early evening hours.
