HOUSTON -– The suspect in a break-in at a dollar store was in custody early Monday following a chase across Houston’s northside, police said.

Houston police said they followed the suspect following a burglary at a store along Highway 290 near Barker Cypress on the northwest side of town.

The suspect led police eastbound on 290 to the 610 Loop. He then got off the freeway and jumped out of his moving truck near the 5000 block of Calvalcade.

Police said the suspect’s truck kept rolling for about four or five blocks after he jumped out, eventually running into a tree.

“I was at the stoplight and was about to go, when all of the sudden this car hit me on the side, and it scared the hell out of me,” one witness told KHOU 11 News. “I didn’t know what was going on.”

Police said a helicopter and K-9 units were brought in, and the suspect was located a short time later.

The suspect was taken into custody, but his identity was not immediately released.
