HARRIS COUNTY -- Deputies said a young man who died from a gunshot wound may have survived had he driven himself to the hospital instead of going home.
The shooting happened late Monday in northwest Harris County, according to the sheriff’s office.
Around 10 p.m. a 911 caller said a black car was chasing a white car along Cypresswood Drive. The cars stopped, and gunshots were heard. The cars then sped from the scene.
A short time later, someone on Chapel Pines Drive near Champion Pines Drive called deputies to report a shooting. The victim's sister said her brother was lying n front of her condo, but she was leaving the scene. Deputies arrived to find the young man already dead.
Investigators determined the man, who was in his 20s, was shot and then drove himself home instead of to the hospital.
"We know there was a shooting while he was driving," said Sgt. Robert Spergeon.
Deputies said the gunfire occurred both while the cars were stopped and while they were moving, but they weren't sure at what point the man was struck. Deputies also didn’t know why his sister left the scene.
“It’s pretty scary since it’s so close to home,” said one resident, named Meredith. “And I’ve lived here for two to three years, and I’ve never seen any type of chaos here at all.”
“It’s becoming a sadder and sadder world every day,” said neighbor David Hennigan.
Detectives are now trying to figure out who may have shot the man.
