HOUSTON – A man armed with a shotgun was arrested Wednesday morning outside the front of an elementary school in south Houston, deputies said.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, it happened around 10:30 a.m. in front of Victor Hugo Hartsfield Elementary, located in the 5000 block of Perry Street.
A deputy with Precinct 7 was flagged down by a passing motorist at the corner of Martin Luther King and Yellowstone boulevards, several blocks south of the campus. The motorist alerted the deputy to the suspect at the nearby school.
The deputy relayed the information and two Precinct 7 supervisors responded to the call.
When the deputies arrived at the elementary, they saw a man, identified as Dorian Anthony Johnson, walking in front of the school carrying a black pistol-grip shotgun. Johnson was just steps away from the front door of the school when the deputies arrived.
The deputies confronted the armed suspect and ordered him to drop his weapon. After several verbal commands the Johnson complied and was placed under arrest.
Witnesses told deputies that Johnson had tried to enter the school, but was turned away since he did not have a shirth on. He went back to his house and returned with the shotgun.
Johnson was walking up and down Perry street in front of the school, when a neighbor standing in her yard, dialed 911.
“He pointed the shotgun at her while she was on the phone asked her who she was talking to. At that point the crime became aggravated assault with a deadly weapon,” Sgt. Odell Haynes with Precinct 7 Constable’s Office said.
Johnson remains in custody and is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, deputies said.
“He’s as good guy, he’s not in his right mind. I don’t know he probably just going through something right now. It aint that he’s crazy or nothing,” a friend of Johnson’s, who did not want to be identified, said.
Another neighbor said Johnson originally went to the school looking for help.
Houston ISD Police and the Houston Police Department also responded to this incident.
