HOUSTON -– A 19-year-old man was taken to the hospital to get checked out after he fell asleep and crashed into a utility pole on Jones Road, deputies said early Wednesday.

The crash happened around 3:15 a.m. near Tower Oaks, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the young man fell asleep, crashing into a wood utility pole, which broke in two. Power, cable, and telephone services were cut off by the crash. Officials said about a thousand homes and a few businesses were affected.

Authorities closed down Jones Road for about an hour while crews worked to get the power lines off the roadway.

Deputies said the driver simply fell asleep while driving, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
