HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Deputies said early Friday a worker painting stripes in a northeast Harris County parking lot was shot after he sprayed one of two robbery suspects with paint.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. on E. Sam Houston Parkway at Wallisville.
Deputies said the suspects initially tried to break into one of the paint crew's vehicles. When they were confronted, one of the suspects allegedly pointed their gun at a painter, who then sprayed the gunman with paint. The suspect opened fire, shooting the painter twice, deputies said.
The two suspects fled the scene in a mini-van but were later spotted by a Precinct 3 Constable Deputy. The men gave chase and eventually wrecked under an East Freeway overpass near Freeport. One of the men was caught after a brief foot chase while the other man got away.
Deputies said the suspect they caught may be the shooter as he had paint on him as well as a gun he was carrying.
One deputy injured his leg during the foot chase and was sent to the hospital as a precaution.
The shooting victim was sent to the hospital in serious condition but was expected to survive.
