HARRIS COUNTY -- An off-duty Houston police officer shot and killed a burglary suspect Monday in the backyard of her home, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Department.

It happened in the 3400 block of La Seine near FM 2920 in northwest Harris County.

The officer was home alone when she heard a noise in her yard and spotted the suspect.

"She confronted the suspect outside. And the suspect attempted to disarm the officer. At which time he discharged her weapon," said Sgt. Robert Spurgeon with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Jonathon Leonard, who lives across the street said a heard the officer screaming, then gunshots.

"It was like, pop, pop, pop, pop," said Leonard. "When I was coming down the stairs, I thought, that sounds like gunfire. And so I put my daughter down. Came down here. And a guy was shot to death."

The suspect, whose name hasn't been released, died at the scene.

Neighbors say he picked the wrong place. Two other HPD officers live on the street and several homes have security cameras.

"I’m in shock. I’m still shaking. I’m scared to death," said Connie Kieschnick, who lives in the area.

Neighbors describe the officer as extremely quiet.

But all of the ones we spoke with believe she had the right to defend herself.
