HOUSTON—A man was fatally shot just steps outside his home in an apparent carjacking Thursday morning, Harris County investigators said.
It happened around 8 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 22900 block of Imperial Valley.
Deputies said the victim, 22-year-old Ricardo Romero, had just left his apartment and was heading to work when he was approached by a man who demanded his keys.
At some point during the confrontation, the suspect apparently opened fire, striking Romero three times – twice in the chest and once in the arm, deputies said.
Romero's wife heard the gunshots and rushed to his side.
"She comes running out, and he points this way toward where his car was parked. And [she] saw a male enter it and he sped off out the gate," Sgt. Monte Nabors said.
Romero was rushed to Ben Taub, where he died from his injuries.
Deputies said the victim’s car was a lime green 2003 Ford Taurus with chrome spoke wheels and whitewall tires. It has Texas plates JZR258.
The suspect was bald and was wearing all black at the time of the incident, investigators said.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
