HOUSTON – A homeowner fatally shot an intruder early Sunday in southeast Houston, Harris County deputies said.

It happened at about 4 a.m. in the 8100 block of Glenheath.

Police said the residents were awakened by a loud banging noise at their front door, so the 56-year-old male homeowner retrieved his pistol and went to investigate.

As he reached the back door, it was kicked in by a 20-year-old man who then entered the residence, deputies said.

The homeowner fired his weapon, striking the suspect. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported the man to Ben Taub General Hospital where he died.

His identity was not released.

The homeowner was not injured in the incident.

The case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.
