HOUSTON – An investigation is under way after a 10-year-old child grabbed a rifle and shot his 4-year-old cousin in the leg Saturday, said Lt. David Escobar with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office.

It happened at about 11 a.m. inside a house located in the 1400 block of Danby Heath Lane in Spring.

Investigators said a woman, who doesn’t live in the home, was watching a group of children at the house when it happened.

The 10-year-old child found the rifle in the closet and thought it was a toy, investigators said.

The 4-year-old girl was transported to Texas Children’s Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

“It was a lack of supervision and mistakes that lead to great tragedy,” Richard Wilkens, a family friend, said.

Deputies said the child’s mother was not home because she and other family members were busy planning funeral for their 9-year-old daughter, who died of sickle cell just hours before the accidental shooting.

The shooting is believed to be accidental, but the investigation is ongoing.

“If you are going to have a gun put it up, so that young children can’t have access to the gun…that’s bad,” Sue Haywood, a neighbor, said.

No charges have been filed, but Child Protective Services is now looking in the incident.
