HARRIS COUNTY, Texas —Parents and workers of Angel’s World Child Care have just about lost their cool.
Copper thieves recently hit three separate units owned by the day care at 13390 Jones Road.
Melody Bull has two children at the facility and can’t believe what people will do for a little cash.
"It just seems crazy to me that someone would take air conditioning from a place that takes care of babies on up," Bull said.
Small fans have been trying to do the job that 20 tons of air conditioning used to do.
Daycare director LaBianca Anderson has nearly 100 children at the facility.
"We take care of a lot of children so it was heartbreaking," Anderson said.
Anderson believes the thieves scaled the roof and ripped apart their units, which was valued at $30,000.
The theft was discovered when Joshua Miller of Golden Rule Air Conditioning and Heating got the call to check out the problem.
"For the ability to redeem a condenser coil for maybe 15 dollars for scrap, they destroyed thousands of dollars of equipment," said Miller.
Golden Rule donated a small, temporary unit that cools one-third of the day care. Angel’s World is insured but the air conditioning units are not covered. So far, the cheapest quote for a replacement is $20,000.
Anderson prays she’ll find a way to make it through this heat and has a message for those responsible.
"God does not like ugly and what goes around comes around."
Until then, though, Anderson and the rest of the workers at Angel’s World Child Care will do their best to deal with the heat.
