BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas –- The chief of the Damon Volunteer Fire Department died overnight while battling a fire in Brazoria County, officials say.

The Brazoria County Fire Marshal said Chief Hugh Ferguson was helping carry a water hose when he collapsed outside.

Firefighters immediately started CPR. He was flown to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The chief served for more than 24 years, colleagues said.

Ferguson is survived by his wife, and two sons, who are both firefighters, and one grandchild.

No one was home when the house caught fire, and no one else was injured.
