HARRIS COUNTY -- People normally light up and cool down at a cigar shop just east of 249 on FM 1960, but Harris County Sheriff’s investigators said two men fighting over a woman heated things up Tuesday evening.
“They got into a physical altercation in the store,” said Sgt. Eric Batton. “The male tries to leave. The victim doesn’t permit him to leave. We don’t know why. Ultimately, he was able to flee out the back.”
But he wasn’t gone long. Investigators said he retrieved a gun from his car, came back to the store and opened fire, striking the victim in the hand and torso.
The injured man had to be flown to the hospital.
David Bryant frequents the cigar shop and stopped off there on his way home from work.
“I was inside looking at some things that were on sale,” said Bryant. “Someone said someone was shot and then we ran away from the windows wondering what was going on and the next thing we knew the police were here.”
Authorities still don’t know why the men were fighting, but said one of them was the ex-husband of the other man’s current girlfriend. The shooter was taken into custody at the scene, and shoppers lighting up their stogies were being a little more cautious.
“We’re in Houston, Texas and bad things happen all the time,” said Bryant.
The victim was listed in critical condition at Memorial Herman Hospital.
Detectives said the case would be referred to a grand jury.
The violent altercation was captured by surveillance cameras inside the shop.
