HOUSTON –- A driver crashed into an electric transformer at a northwest Houston apartment complex early Wednesday, knocking out power to several buildings, police said.

It happened at the Clearbrook Apartments in the 4000 block of W. 34th Street around 4 a.m., Houston police said.

Police said the driver lost control of his silver sedan when he swerved to avoid a wrong-way driver. The car hit a tree and then took out an electric box, leaving the complex partially in the dark.

CenterPoint Energy crews were called to the scene, but they said they couldn’t make immediate repairs because the damaged equipment belongs to the apartment complex.

There was no early word on how long the repairs would take, but as of 6 a.m. six buildings in the complex remained in the dark.

CenterPoint said the driver will have to pay for the repairs.
