HOUSTON -- A couple is dead after a bizarre nighttime crash in north Houston.

Officers with the Houston Police Department say it was just after 9 p.m. Thursday when the couple's SUV went speeding through the 6600 block of Irvington Boulevard. When their red Chevy Tahoe came upon some railroad tracks, there was apparently a dip in the road that caused the driver to lose control.

Police are not sure if the driver was impaired, but they say he was definitely speeding. He was going so fast that officers say the SUV went airborne.

“Onto the opposite side of the railway,” Sgt. C.B. Nickerson with the Houston Police Department said. “Continues to travel and it strikes into a telephone pole. At that point the impact of the vehicle spins, and both the driver and the passenger are ejected from the vehicle.”

Sgt. Nickerson said the female passenger died at the scene, and the driver died later at a hospital. Their names have not been released.
