CONROE, Texas -- A mother suffered second degree burns while rescuing her two children from an apartment fire.
The flames broke out around 11 p.m. in the Timbers of Pine Hollow apartments off Plantation Drive.
Nicky Dulaney says she left a pot of oil on the stove, but the stove was turned off.
She went outside to smoke a cigarette, and when she walked back in, the whole apartment was on fire.
She grabbed her 2-year-old Jada, and then rescued her 4-year-old son Riley.
"I was terrified, terrified, but I had to get them out," said Dulaney. "I used my body as a shield."
Neighbors tried to help her rescue the family dog, but they couldn't save the animal in time.
While investigators are still looking into what caused the fire, Dulaney believes there may have been an electrical short in her stove.
"If you cook on it without shoes, it shocks you," she said. "But I didn't think it would cause the oil to boil or anything."
The family lost everything in the blaze and did not have renter's insurance. They will now be staying with relatives.
"We're going to go back to work and start over," said Dulaney. "Do what we can."
