HOUSTON -– The Houston Fire Department was called in to assist a clerk after a failed smash-and-grab at a northeast side gas station.

It happened early Wednesday at the Citgo on the Eastex Freeway at Collingsworth Street.

Houston police said it was around 5 a.m. when a dark blue or black Chevrolet pickup crashed into the gas station. Four guys jumped out of the truck to try and steal the store’s ATM, but they soon gave up and left empty-handed.

Inside the store at the time was clerk Syed Shah. He wasn’t hurt, but he was trapped in the rubble the crooks left behind. Firefighters were called in to free the clerk.

“You know we have to repair this,” said Shah. “We’ll see what we can do. All the counter is damaged – everything is damaged.”

The crooks got away in the same pickup they used to crash into the store.
