HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A 10-year-old boy died after he was thrown from a car that ran a red light in east Harris County Tuesday, according to investigators.
The crash happened along Highway 90 near Uvalde Road in the Channelview area.
Investigators said Maria Cornejo, the driver of a Pontiac, ran a red light and slammed into a Scion.
The victim, Cornejo’s son Carmelo, was riding in the backseat of the Pontiac without a seat belt, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said. He died at the scene.
Maria Cornejo was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Information on her medical condition has not been released yet.
The driver of the Scion and a 3-year-old passenger were transported by ambulance to LBJ Hospital. That child was in a car seat and is expected to be OK.
The district attorney’s office will decide whether to file charges against the Cornejo, who allegedly ran the red light.
Family members said that she was driving her son, who has a heart condition, back from a doctor’s appointment.
