HOUSTON -- A suspect was critically injured during a high-speed chase on the northwest side of town early Friday, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies said the chase started shortly before 1 a.m. when an officer with the Houston Police Department tried to stop a Dodge Caravan. Officials said the van was being driven without any headlights.

The suspect allegedly refused to pull over and went northbound on Beltway 8 to Highway 290. The suspect then exited at Jones Road while deputies and police officers followed behind.

Deputies said the driver, who reached speeds around 100 miles per hour, eventually hit a curb and went airborne. The van then struck a large tree before landing on its roof.

The driver was to the hospital by Life Flight in critical condition.

No other injuries were reported.
