HOUSTON –- The Houston Police Department said Thursday that charges have been filed against a man responsible for a fatal crash early New Year’s Day.
The suspect, 21-year-old Diego Islas, is charged with intoxication manslaughter.
Witnesses told police Islas was driving a newer Chevrolet Silverado pickup eastbound on Pierce Street in downtown when he ran a red light and slammed into the side of a Mercedes C230. A man riding in the back of the sedan died at the scene. His name has not been released.
The woman driving the sedan was taken to an area hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery.
Islas was taken into custody at the scene, and police performed a blood draw at the hospital.
Police did not identify the man killed in the crash, but they said his wife is expected to make a full recovery.
The crash was just one of several across the Houston area on New Year's. From midnight to 6 a.m. about a dozen major crashes were reported inside the city limits alone.
