HOUSTON – Authorities are searching two suspects after they were caught on a security video running into a southwest Houston eye glasses boutique and snatching a pair of high-end specs off a shelf.
Around 9 a.m., the thieves struck the Vision Optique store on Buffalo Speedway.
“(He) just opens door reaches over here grabs it, and he’s gone to a waiting car,” Dr. Bradley Owens, one of the physicians at the store, said.
“His partner in crime following him in the parking lot out here, so he runs in grabs it and runs right now. He wasn’t in the store three seconds,” Owens said referring to the act caught on camera.
The incident took a total of six seconds from beginning to end with the suspect fleeing the scene in a white older model SUV.
“It was very scary. I didn’t know how to react,” Huy Nong, an employee at Vision Optique, said. “Dr. Owens is quite the athlete, almost ran him down.”
Several employees sprinted after them, but could not get a license plate number.
The suspects made off with two Chanel sunglasses; the pearl-studded shades retail for $709.
“Pairs of sunglasses over $1,000 easily,” Owens said.
Glasses at the store range from $300 to $1100 a pair, so it doesn’t take much to see why that attracts shoppers and thieves.
“There’s so many people around you don’t know who’s gonna be a thief,” Rhonda Mitchell, a customer, said.
This is the third time this store has been hit in the last 14 years.
“A rock this big, big ole thing and smashed into this window here,” Owens said when describing the first time the store was hit. “We took a loss of close to $30,000 on that one. They had bags and they came along just raked it down,."
