HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A woman sleeping in her north Harris County home woke up to find a car on top of her, deputies said early Wednesday.
The crash occurred in the 9200 block of Airline Drive around midnight.
Neighbors heard the commotion and lost power.
"We thought someone had crashed into the pole but then we turned to the right and there was a car inside the house," said Leo Hernandez.
Hernandez watched as the driver started moving.
"He just jumped out his window and we thought he was gonna help or something," said Sarai Hernandez. "Out of nowhere, he starts pulling off the bumper and started running down that way."
A group of neighbors ran after the driver, who was later identified as 23-year-old Anthony Franco.
Meanwhile, Hernandez and his family realized that a woman was trapped underneath the car.
"At first, we thought she was just stuck in the car or something," said Sarai Hernandez. "We thought she was in there and got hurt and crashed. Another woman said no … she was sleeping on the bed the car just ran in and fell on top of her."
The neighbors quickly got inside the mobile home and tried to pull the car off of her.
Leo Hernandez described the conversation he had with the woman.
"She said, ‘I’m fine. I feel hot. I feel like I’m burning.’ I said, ‘You have to stay down there. You feel hot because the motor’s still hot, but you’re not on fire,’" he recalled.
Fire crews showed up and eventually freed the woman. She had a few burns on her legs but was expected to make a full recovery.
As for the neighbors, they did catch up with Franco and forced him back to the scene.
He was arrested and charged with DWI and failing to stop and render aid. Police said Franco was one and half times over the legal limit.
