HOUSTON—For the next several days, more than a 100 volunteers will donate their time and their might to help victims of the Haiti earthquake.
It’s the first installment of a thousand pre-fabricated homes, and volunteers hope to start shipping them out before the rainy season sets in.
This labor of love can seem a little disorganized until workers start to synchronize, then the results are startling.
“When we have 70 to 80 volunteers, we can produce 10 homes an hour,” said Mike Malkemes, C.O.R.E. Alliance.
C.O.R.E. Alliance, the Christians Organized for Relief Efforts, is a Houston-based group that began by helping victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Ike. Now they are teaming up once again for Haiti.
“As much as we do unto the least of Christ’s children, we are doing unto him,” said Larry Chandley, a volunteer.
Volunteers come in all ages. During Spring Break, the group gets plenty of young people.
“That’s like the best thing ever, knowing that I built a house for someone in need,” said Alex Brielmaier, volunteer. He is not the only one who feels donating time is precious.
“By helping them, I’m enriching my own life more than I could than doing what I usually do over the weekend,” said Ellen Zhou, another volunteer.
Each modular home is designed to house up to 12 people. The group’s goal is to build 1000 homes.
All this hinges upon the kindness of others. Participants have donated lumber, machinery, time and expertise.
The group is committed to the project for 6 months and they need all the man power they can get.
