HOUSTON—Two high school students were busted for spending bogus money in the cafeteria at C. E. King High School, Sheldon ISD officials said Wednesday.

District officials said $260 in counterfeit money passed through the school last week.

At face value, the fake $20 bills look real, but the cafeteria workers eventually noticed that all the serial numbers were the same.

"It got to a point where they started noticing and everything and they caught up," said a student named Reggie. "I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have known the difference between a fake and a real."

The two teens bought food at school and also asked other students to go to the counter and break change for them.

"They had a whole lot of counterfeit money," said Reggie. "They were getting change from it spreading it around, getting change from other students, so they wouldn’t be connected with it."

After a couple of days, the savvy lunch ladies pieced the case together and students were questioned.

At this point, it’s not clear if the students made the counterfeit cash, but one of the juveniles could face possible charges of forgery and distribution.

Both students will be placed in an alternative school for 45 days, district officials said.
