HOUSTON -– A 22-year-old man died late Monday when someone opened fire on a group of people who were preparing to play soccer in southwest Houston, police said.
It happened shortly before 9 p.m. in the 7000 block of Bissonnet Street near Larkwood Drive, according to the Houston Police Department.
Witnesses told police a dark four-door sedan pulled up to the Oaks on Bissonnet apartments. Someone inside the car rolled down a window and opened fire on the group of men. Several rounds were fired, and Lazaro Rivas-Opico was hit and died at the scene.
Investigators said the victim was most likely not the intended target and was just an innocent bystander.
The suspect or suspects fled the scene before police arrived.
