HOUSTON - The Internet has received a rare look into the Bush family, as well as the final weeks when George H.W. Bush was in the hospital.
A cyber-criminal identified only as “Guccifer” hacked into the former president’s AOL account and reportedly used another hacked account to post what they found.
So far, “The Smoking Gun” has been the only media outlet to be in contact with the hacker, who told them hundreds of accounts had been compromised.
Guccifer also told them this was just another chapter in their “game” with the Bush family.
Computer forensics consultant Ernesto Rojas believes “game” may be a good way to describe it.
“They’re trying to a small degree to prove their technical prowess,” he said.
Though none of the information published appears to be incriminating, it is clearly personal.
Family photos include George H.W. Bush recovering in his hospital bed, as well as self-portraits done by George W. Bush.
Then, there is George W. Bush’s home address and gate code, as well as an e-mail he allegedly wrote soliciting anecdotes for a eulogy for his father.
Rojas said it could take months, even years, to determine who Guccifer really is.
“You could be talking about someone who’s across the world from you,” he said.
A spokesman for the Bush family confirmed that a criminal investigation is now underway. Beyond that, they had no further comment.
