HOUSTON –- Police in northeast Houston were on the hunt early Monday for a trio of crooks who used heavy equipment to try and break into a bank’s ATM.

Officers with the Houston Police Department said they were called to the Chase Bank on the North Loop near McCarty around 3 a.m. after an alarm was triggered in a drive-through ATM.

A security company pulled up surveillance video, saw the suspects, and then called HPD.

“They were using a motorized grinder,” HPD Police Lt. Larry Crowson said. “It’s apparently some kind of tool that’s used to grind open steel.”

Despite the heavy machinery, the men were not able to get into the ATM.

When officers arrived, the three men left their stolen mini van behind and ran northbound on a nearby road.

Police brought in search dogs, but the men were not located.
