HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – One person was injured Monday in a chemical plant fire near the City of La Porte.

The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m. at Akzo Nobel Polymer Chemicals located north of Highway 225. There was an explosion in a unit that produces a co-catalyst used in the making of plastic, company officials said.

It sent a huge plume of black smoke into the sky. Both the cities of La Porte and Pasadena said there was no shelter-in-place issued, and there was no immediate danger to the community.

Company spokeswoman Debbie Sullivan said the situation was under control in about 45 minutes.

“Our internal emergency response team did respond to it, it was declared under control about a quarter to 2, it’s still burning but we’re just trying to let it burn itself out,” Sullivan said. “We did have one contract maintenance employee who was injured and sent to Herman Memorial Hospital. I don’t know the extent of the injuries.”

There was no word on the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire. The company said it was focusing on extinguishing the fire and making sure all of its employees were safe.

The company said it has been seven years since they’ve had a fire at the plant.
