HOUSTON—Many Houston families are in a daily struggle just to put food on the table. But there are programs that are doing what they can to help. The Boys and Girls Club is keeping local children fed with a big serving of help from its food bank.
Growing kids have big appetites, but a shrinking economy can sometimes hinder a child from consuming as much as they need, but the Boys and Girls Club is filling the void, and bellies, of underprivileged children that need a little extra care.
Most of the kids the club services are not able to come to hot meals because some of their parents work during the day.
The club is trying to reverse those numbers by feeding an estimated 1,500 kids every day. The goal is to help kids get the nutrition they need.
"During the school year, kids get two-thirds of their nutrients, vitamins and minerals; and in the summer they get none," said Ann Svendsen-Sanchez, Houston Food Bank.
The Food Bank says it feeds kids in other programs throughout the year. The hope is this one will help make sure they are healthy and in good shape when they head back to school.
