HOUSTON—Every year the Boy scouts go door-to-door to collect non-perishable food items for local food banks. But this year is a little different. Boy Scouts of America has teamed up with the Souper Bowl of Caring.

More than 12,000 scouts fanned out across Houston Saturday, braving the winter cold on a mission. They also dodged a few barks and snarls from dogs that did not welcome the spirited ones on their property.
“Gentleman, what we’re going to do is we’re going to go down this street here. Alright? I want two of you on one side and three on the other,” said Bruce Folts, troop leader.
Folts has been with the organization for most of his life.
“I’ve been doing this since I was in second grade, never gotten out,” he said.
Folts now comes out with his three sons.
“They’re all in scouts, so it’s a family affair,” he said.
Scouts walked the streets of Houston, Pasadena, the Woodlands and other local cities to collect cans for local food banks. The plan is for the kids to drop off the flyers today, and then return next Saturday to hopefully find lots of non-perishable food items on all resident’s doorsteps.
So if you see a flyer on your door, don’t get annoyed, open it, some good little scout might have braved your German shepherd hoping in return you’d leave them a few cans to help feed the hungry.
In addition to the Boy Scouts, the Houston Zoo is also collecting donations from zoo patrons. Just bring a non-perishable food item to the zoo this weekend and you’ll receive one free child’s admission with the purchase of an adult ticket.
