HOUSTON – A Houston Police Department bomb squad investigated a suspicious backpack left outside HISD’s Barbara Bush Elementary early Thursday.

The discovery was made around 7 a.m.

A spokesman for the Houston Independent School District said as of 8:20 a.m. the entire school was evacuated.

Views from Air 11 showed a large red backpack on the ground near the curb in front of the school, which is located at Parkway Plaza Drive and Westerloch Drive in far west Houston.

HISD said all threats made against a student or a campus are taken seriously, and police will work together to ensure there is a safe environment for students and staff.

Parents were notified of the situation.

An update after 9 a.m. indicated the backpack was determined to be harmless, and all students returned to class.
