HOUSTON — Police and fire investigators are looking into the discovery of a body in a burning SUV on Houston’s southeast side early Monday.

Firefighters found a black male in the back seat of the GMC Yukon after someone called the Houston Fire Department around 4 a.m. to report a fire in the 3600 block of McKinney.

Houston Police Department homicide detectives said it appears the man had been shot. But it’s unclear if the man died from the gunshot wound or the fire. Police are waiting on autopsy results for confirmation.

The uncertainty has neighbors on edge.

“You never know,” said Maria Guzman. “It’s just so close to where my parents live. I mean what do you expect in this neighborhood?”

Police spent hours Monday afternoon investigating the scene.  They brushed for finger prints, snapped photos and even brought a canine out to pick up any scent left behind. They removed evidence from the car, including a gas canister.

The victim has not been identified.

Police asking anyone with information to call them.
