HOUSTON-- Tens of thousands of birds have been filling the skies above Willowbrook Mall in northwest Houston.

Purple martins have taken up residence in the oak trees as they gather together before migrating from Houston to South America for the winter.

Dozens of people have been flocking to the mall around 8 p.m. not for shopping, but for bird watching.  They are armed with cameras to catch a glimpse of their fine feathered friends before they roost for the night.

Many of the tourists bring something for cover knowing that at some point the birds will have to relieve themselves.

While it may be an inconvenience most say they’re willing to put up with it.

The purple martins are expected to be around the Willowbrook Mall area for another week.
