HOUSTON – Animal shelters across the state say more and more families are having to give up their pets, and many facilities are full.

That’s why BARC held a huge adoption event – with steep discounts – at a Kroger parking lot in the Heights Sunday.

After KHOU 11 aired a on the capacity crisis at the shelter Thursday, Houstonians stepped up, adopting more than 200 cats and dogs. On Saturday alone, BARC said a record 148 pets found forever homes!

Despite the heat, animal lovers waited outside the Kroger again Sunday to pick up a pet.

The reduced rates -- $10 for cats and $20 for dogs – were a big draw for people thinking of adding a furry family member.

"We figured we would check it out. They lowered the prices," Lynn Standish said.

"We’re looking for a kitten. I think I already spot one. I hope it’s there when I get up there," Doris Becks said.

But BARC said even with all the good adoption news, their capacity troubles continue. About 200 more animals were brought into the shelter over the weekend.
