HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – The driver of an 18-wheeler veered off the North Freeway’s southbound lanes overnight, crashing into a utility pole, deputies said.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened near Lou Lane around 4 a.m. Thursday.

Deputies said the big rig went across the grassy shoulder and frontage road lanes before knocking out a fire hydrant and smashing into a utility pole. The truck stopped just short of hitting a nearby business.

The driver was sent to the hospital. Deputies said he did not appear to be injured from the crash, but they said he was incoherent.

They said he would be looked over at the hospital to see if he was suffering from some kind of medical emergency or if other factors played into the crash.

The subsequent cleanup closed the freeway's southbound frontage road lanes for several hours, reported Houston TranStar.
