BAYTOWN, Texas -- The mother of a 16-year old killed trying to protect her is speaking out for the first time.

Tanya Edwards and her son Prezton were both stabbed by her ex-boyfriend last month.

She was just released from the hospital.

"I was told I was stabbed 27 times," Edwards said. "Most of my injuries are on my right side. The right side is where I was trying to protect my face and my heart."

But her heart is broken because her son didn't survive.

He jumped on the back of her boyfriend and was stabbed in the neck.

Dene McCarter was later arrested and charged with his death.

"I hate that it had to go the way it did but I thank God to be here," Edwards said.

Edwards asked family and friends to come back to the apartment complex of the deadly stabbing at E. James Street and Kilgore Road to remember her son.

"He had a lot of friends and everybody loved him," said his friend Natassja Davis.

They lit candles, prayed and released balloons into the air to remember the 16-year-old. 'I don't even know where to go from here," Edwards said. "I don't even know what to do."

Prezton Edwards will be laid to rest on Friday.
