HOUSTON—A Houston man who was trying to steal meat from a grocery store left a 5-year-old child behind during the getaway, according to Harris County Sheriff's deputies.

Darin Dwayne Brooks, 46, was charged with child abandonment.

Deputies said Brooks had the child with him while he was stealing meat from a Kroger on FM 1960 on November 25. When security tried to take him into custody, he bolted and fled in a beige SUV, but left the child behind.

Brooks called the child’s mother and grandmother to tell them what happened, according to court documents.

When the women went to pick up the abandoned child, they cooperated with police and confirmed Brooks’ identity.

His bail was set at $10,000.
