HOUSTON – An autopsy shows a Texas A&M University student who was struck and killed by a freight train was drunk at the time of the incident.
Garrett Luce, 19, was struck by the train in the early morning hours of Nov. 4.
Raquel Espinoza, a spokeswoman for Union Pacific, said he had been laying in the tracks and that the conductor did not see him moving.
“The train whistle was sounded two different times,” she said as police conducted an investigation. “He [Luce] was not wearing earphones and we don’t know why he didn’t respond to those warnings.”
The autopsy showed his blood alcohol was .23. The legal limit in Texas is .08.
Luce had been a pledge at Kappa Alpha.
