HOUSTON –- A chase came to an end in northeast Houston early Tuesday after police said a man managed to briefly evade them by driving on railroad tracks.

It started around 2 a.m. when an officer responded to reports of an abandoned stolen vehicle in a parking lot along the North Freeway at Tidwell, the Houston Police Department said.

According to HPD, when an officer pulled into the parking lot, a man jumped into a red van and sped off. Officers gave chase, and the suspect led them down the frontage road to Crosstimbers, then east on Hirsch.

The suspect drove onto some railroad tracks, where the officer got stock on the rocks, police said.

The van then went several blocks before he blew a rear tire and lost control, crashing into a flatbed trailer. The suspect ran away on foot, but police managed to track him down after setting up a search perimeter.

Police said the man faces felony evading and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

HPD said a woman was in the in van as well, but she wouldn’t face any charges.
