Search for missing kayaker

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- Authorities continued searching a man-made lake for signs of a missing kayaker on Sunday but decided to call off their effort after sunset.

“We’ve exhausted all of our resources,” said Robert Rasa, a spokesperson for the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department. “It’s very frustrating."

Rescue crews had been searching the pond, located near West Road and Barker Cypress Road, since Saturday when 32-year-old Ryan Smith was first reported missing. Smith was described as an experienced kayaker.

Neighbors found his vessel capsized not far from where he had left his pickup.

Dive teams dragged parts of the lake and used sonar and specially trained dogs to try and locate Smith.

Officials said the lake was more than 80 feet deep in some spots. Officials said they were treating the case as a missing person’s investigation since no one knew for sure that Smith was in the water.

Crews planned to return to the site in the morning, but the active search was not expected to resume.

Smith’s family members did not want to speak.
