LEAGUE CITY, Texas — For nearly three hours Thursday morning, there was an all-out manhunt in League City.
The League City Police Department said two men, Ernesto Elonzo Hamilton and Kevin Joseph Riggs, had robbed a Wells Fargo in the 1600 block of FM 646 near the East Gulf Freeway around 10 a.m. and then peeled off in a red minivan.
However, they did not get very far and soon dumped their guns, clothing and wads of cash in the Victory Lakes subdivision just a few blocks from the scene.
Police said the men started running through backyards. Officers soon caught up with Riggs and arrested him.
But they did not discover his accomplice until hours later. They found Hamilton hiding in bushes at the edge of Gary Harris’ property.
“He put his hands up and that was it,” Harris said. “He had to be here the whole time. They (police) looked, they searched everywhere around here, but I don’t think they ever searched those bushes right there.”
Harris and his wife could not believe it.
“I was very excited because you know my wife, she was thinking about leaving ‘cause she didn’t want to stay here the night knowing the officers left and he was still running free in this neighborhood,” he said.
No one was hurt and it is still too early to know if the suspects could be connected to other robberies. For now, many residents are simply grateful to know this chapter is over.
Both men are charged with aggravated robbery and evading, police said. Bond has been set at $250,000.
