HOUSTON – A male suspect died Saturday evening from gunshot wounds he sustained while attempting to rob an armored car earlier in the day in west Houston.

Investigators with the Houston Police Department said that the suspect approached two security guards, a man and a woman, near their vehicle in the parking lot of the AMC 30 theater complex on Dunvale Road near Westheimer Road at 3:20 p.m.

The suspect shot the woman in the hip and her partner returned fire wounding the man, police said.

The woman was taken to a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, police said. The suspect was transported to Ben Taub Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The FBI is assisting HPD with the investigation. Investigators said the armored car is owned by company Garda.

As for the theater, it remained open after everything unfolded. Many people had no idea what was even happening.

Larry Smith was headed to the restroom at the time – and described the scene in the lobby like this.

“And then they were telling everybody to get away from the glass because there were some gun shots outside,” Smith said. “And then they all dispersed. And we all went in different directions and got away from it all.”
