HOUSTON -- Are more people “unfriending” the social networking site Facebook than ever before?

It depends on who you ask.

“I de-activated my account,” said Lajuana Acklin, who deleted the account she had for seven years just three months ago. “Over time, it became a hybrid between Craigslist and MySpace.”

“The nudity increased, a lot of the profane language increased, more so, it was the advertisements. Everyone is trying to sell you something on Facebook now,” she said.

The website, Inside Facebook, reports the social networking site gained 12 million users in May. But, you can thank countries like Mexico and France for the increase. According to the website’s report, Facebook lost users in the United States by the millions.

“It’s kind of like a new toy. You play with it for a while. It’s now five, six, seven years old,” said Facebook user Brett Mitchell.

Mitchell said he still uses Facebook, but he’s cut back from an hour a day to thirty minutes a week. His girlfriend also spends more time communicating with friends in person rather than online.

“It’s sensory overload,” said Colleen Kuraszek.

But, Brittany Creel, a 25-year-old occupational therapist, has no plans to delete her account, and she says her friends aren’t getting off Facebook either.

“Most of us have stayed on,” said Creel. “I like being in touch with all my friends and the people that I don’t get to see a lot.”

So while some may not be the “friending fiends,” it seems Facebook isn’t going anywhere, at least for now.
