HOUSTON -- Houston police say the 4-month-old baby girl who was allegedly taken by her mother's boyfriend was found safe at a hotel in Galveston Tuesday evening.
Four-month-old Stephanie Lavette Phillips was found alone at the Mariner Inn inside room 122. Officials said the baby girl appeared to be in good health, but was taken to UTMB for observation.
Police then spotted Byron Earl Gee at 19th and L Street and took him into custody.
Gee, 32, is known to be bipolar. Police said he gets violent without his medication and that’s why they were especially concerned for the baby's safety.
According to police, Gee took Stephanie early Tuesday from the Brays Oaks Apartments in the 6400 block of West Bellfort around 4:30 a.m. An Amber Alert was issued shortly before 7 a.m.
Gee allegedly grabbed the child, then ran across the street to another complex. Witnesses said he was running door to door, baby in hand, trying to get someone to open up. When no one would, he went after one woman who was on her way to work.
Gee stole the woman’s white, 1999 Ford Expedition and fled the scene.
He was later spotted with the infant in southeast Houston around 3 p.m., but police could not find him. Police received a tip around 7 p.m. that Gee was in Galveston and learned the baby was in a hotel room.
Two clerks at the hotel were changing shifts when police arrived. They said they can’t believe Gee left the baby all by herself.
“I’m relieved,” said Rosa Bautista who works at Mariner Inn. “He took off running. He just left the baby in the room. I’m glad they found him and the baby’s okay.”
