HOUSTON -- Big flames shot from a north Houston home late Thursday, burning down the abandoned structure that neighbors said homeless people used for shelter.

It happened around 11 p.m. on Hardy Street near Evelyn Street, according to the Houston Fire Department.

The abandoned home was quickly declared a complete loss, but no injuries were reported.

HFD firefighters went into defensive mode and worked to protect a neighboring home. Family members inside the adjacent property made it out safely, but their home suffered some exterior damage due to the intense heat.

Neighbors said homeless people would sometimes sneak into the old home and use it for shelter. There were suspicions that they may have sparked the blaze before running out.
