HOUSTON—KHOU laid wreaths on more than 22,000 gravesites at Houston National Cemetery. More than 50,000 service men and women are buried there. The station joined forces with Wreaths Across America Houston (WAAH), the Houston National Cemetery and the Worcester Wreath Company.
This was the largest wreath laying ceremony in the country---almost double what is laid anywhere else.
Wreaths were purchased by donors from all walks of Houston for $15 each. With the support of KHOU, Corporations such as KBR, Woodlands Elite Cheerleaders, Kingwood Naval ROTC, National Military ladies, local scout troops, individuals and small companies. This campaign was grown from an idea born by seven-year-old Alex deMasi. to an annual event.
Trucks donated by Walmart delivered the wreaths from Maine to Houston on Friday. A procession of over 500 motorcycle riders began Saturday morning from a Walmart store, located at 1107 Shaver Street in Pasadena. In addition, over 100 Corvettes followed the trucks.
Participating riders were from the United American Riders, Patriot Guard Riders, Red Knights, Blue Knights and Rolling Thunder.
11 News’ Len Cannon mc'ed the ceremony and Deborah Duncan, host of Great Day Houston, sang the National Anthem.
