Posted on November 5, 2009 at 12:16 PM

BUSHLAND, Texas (AP) — A natural gas pipeline explosion west of Amarillo shook homes and melted the blinds in windows as fire shot hundreds of feet into the air.

Potter County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Roger Short said three injuries were reported over the fire that was contained by 5:30 a.m. Thursday, several hours after it began.

Short says gas was shut off to the line, about 1 mile north of Bushland, and evacuated residents were being allowed to go home. He said one house was destroyed and a number were damaged.

Bushland Middle School principal Mark Reasor (REES'-er) told The Associated Press that about 60 people had evacuated to the school. He said classes would start one hour late Thursday.

The cause of the explosion is sought.

Bushland is a town of about 1,500, located 15 miles west of Amarillo.
