HOUSTON - Heloise, the nationally known queen of all money- and time-saving tips, says there are two things that everyone needs to save big at home: baking soda and vinegar.

"Between vinegar, baking soda, rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, you can clean probably 90 percent of the things in your household," said Heloise.

And that saves money on buying products like Comet and Ajax.? She said baking soda and soap is all you need to clean a sink.

"Wet the sink," she said. "Sprinkle baking soda.? Put some dish soap on the sponge or brush that you use. Use that and rinse it.? It will clean it, scrub it, deodorize it."

Heloise said that goes for toilets, too. Baking soda and vinegar work just fine, she said. Ajax or Comet will damage the porcelain finish and once you do that, your toilet will never be clean, white and sparkling again, she said.

Heloise also likes to re-use those grocery store bags for Saving Cents.? She has simple tips like using them as can liners and to pick up gross things.

"Think of it as a glove," she said. "Put your hand in the bag. You can pick up the yucky stuff, pull the bag around (your hand) and throw it away."

Heloise also shared her family motto, a phrase that works for anyone looking to save some money.

"Use it up. Use it out or do without," she said.
