HOUSTON-For most students, summer vacation has ended, and school begins Monday for the few remaining districts still on break.? But free family fun in Houston never takes a break.
Did you know that Houston's Theater District is ranked second in the nation?? The ranking is based on number of theater seats in a concentrated downtown area. Also, it's in the top five when it comes to having professional companies of opera, ballet, music and theater performers.
You and your family have a perfect opportunity to get acquainted with our local theater district when it hosts an annual open house this Sunday, August 30, from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.? During the open house, the public can tour most areas of the Alley Theater, Hobby Center, Wortham Theater and Jones Hall-even backstage-for free.? There will also be performances and finger foods provided by some of the best restaurants in town.
Friday, August 28, and Saturday, August 29, at 8:30 p.m., you can check out Luma Light.? It's a human light show with performers juggling, throwing and displaying various lights.? It's a crowd pleaser whether you're four or 94, and it is free at Miller Outdoor Theater in Hermann Park.?
And if you and your kids love trains, you can explore old-style engines, freight and passenger trains at the Houston Railroad Museum.? They have a huge model train set, too.? It's not free, but it's not expensive -- $5 for adults, $ 2.50 for kids. The museum is located at 7390 Mesa Road near Tidwell. The museum is open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
